Transportation Secretary Announces Measure to Facilitate Hurricane Helene Recovery

Federal and state officials accelerate I-40 repairs after hurricane devastation.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently visited North Carolina and Tennessee to assess the damage Hurricane Helene caused to Interstate 40 and receive updates on the recovery process from federal and state officials. He highlighted the importance of restoring the highway quickly to keep communities connected.

To expedite reconstruction, the Department of Transportation and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered to grant a “Special Use” permit, allowing the North Carolina Department of Transportation to source rock and other construction materials from a nearby river. This will reduce transportation costs and project timelines.

During his visit, Secretary Duffy spoke about efforts to streamline federal regulations, seeking to reduce the previous administration’s estimated costs and timeline for restoration.

“I immediately asked my team what we could do to help… Too often, the federal government creates obstacles that slow recovery and drive up costs. This time, we’re cutting through those burdensome barriers to get the job done, ensuring USDOT’s full support for our state partner’s success every step of the way throughout this project,“ said Secretary Duffy.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Duffy to seek God’s direction as he heads the Department of Transportation.
  • For federal and state officials as they work to accelerate the repairs and recovery efforts from the hurricane’s damages.
